The Ancient Magus Bride

Good afternoon, fabulous people!

Today I want to review the fantastic Ancient Magus Bride, here we go!

Chise Hatori, a 15-year-old Japanese girl, was sold for five million pounds at an auction to a tall masked gentleman. Abandoned at a young age and ridiculed by her peers for her unconventional behavior, she was ready to give herself to any buyer if it meant having a place to go home to. In chains and on her way to an unknown fate, she hears whispers from robed men along her path, gossiping and complaining that such a buyer got his hands on a rare “Sleigh Beggy.”

Ignoring the murmurs, the mysterious man leads the girl to a study, where he reveals himself to be Elias Ainsworth—a magus. After a brief confrontation and a bit of teleportation magic, the two open their eyes to Elias’ picturesque cottage in rural England. Greeted by fairies and surrounded by weird and wonderful beings upon her arrival, these events mark the beginning of Chise’s story as the apprentice and supposed bride of the ancient magus.

My opinion

Produced in the Fall of 2017 and created by Wit Studios, you know it’s going to be a good anime as Wit Studios are the producers of Attack on Titan and Serepah of the End.

Can we just start off with that the Anicnet magus bride has a fantastic soundtrack! I absolutely love how gentle it is for a really soft anime story plot.

Chise Hatori

Ancient Magus’ bride introduces 15 year old Chise Hatori, a young Japanese girl who is a rare human called a Sleigh Beggy. Sleigh Beggy’s are very aware of the Fae world and often die young with the amount of power they absorb.

She sells herself to a auction home after he family left her and decides her life is no longer her own and is then bought at auction for 5 million pounds by what seems to be a large man with a dinosaur skull on.

Elias Ainsworth

Unaware of who just bought her life, Chise prepares for the worst when Elias tells her she will become his apprentice and later his wife, this sets Chise back, very shocked as this way she goes down a path of learning how to harnse magic by become a mage.

Now the relationship between Eilas and Chise is what makes up this anime, unlike some child and adult relationships (e.g. Usagi and Mamaru from Sailor moon, Usami and Misaki from Junjou Romantica).

As the show progresses I see the love between the two blossom is a true blessing as Elias tries to help Chise live longer, teach her magic while also batteling the his truth, you definatly see him try and keep her away from it but as her love grows stronger her ambition to learn about the Ancient Mage doesnt stop her.

What we learn about Elias’s Intentions is that he wishes to learn more about humans and with having a life with Chise he would begin to understand more. To me the first few episodes go at a very slow pace only to start off the first arc on episode 3.

But even though the first couple episodes are very light hearted, just 20 minutes in Chise already finds herself in a spot of trouble which tells me that there is much more to this story than meets the eye.

I have to give it to the show of 25 episodes to get straight into it, starting with episode 4, we head into the lion’s den and it really gives us a sense of what the story is going to look like over the course of its episodes, Not only we get to meet some great characters in 2 episodes but such a great way to show us how powerful Chise can be.

There are many different characters in this anime as all are relating to different types of fae, humans and magician’s. I want to give a few shout outs

Lindel is first introduced where a hooded figure on a dragon scoops up Chise and flys off with her, Lindel voiced by Todd Haberkorn is a great addition to the show, Lindel is the caretaker for the dragons and has a fabulous singing voice thanks to the japanese voice actor Daisuke Kamikawa (who also voices Tooru Owikawa in haikyuu and Hisoka in Hunter x Hunter 2011)

We only meet Lindel twice in the whole series itself, but it is known that Lindel and Elias are very old acquaintances and it was actually Lindel who introduced Elias to his master.

Lindel and many of Elias’s acquaintances are very shocked to hear about Elias’s purchase of Chise and Sleigh Beggy’s are very rare and not often come about.

Ruth is probably my favourite supporting character but isn’t introduced until the episode 7, Ruth meets Chise in a grave yard and saves her from an evil spirit, little did we know what ruth was, he is actually a church grim who was trying to get over the fact his owner was dead, after a big battle and 2 episodes Ruth formerly known as
becomes her familiar.

I must say that there bonding was the most beautiful scene ever.

Fae King and Queen

We meet the infamous Queen and king in episode 6 of the show and what actually makes me laugh funimation used Collen Clickenbeard for the queen as in the past she voiced Erza Scarlett whose nickname was ‘Titania queen of fairies’ and for the king they used Joel McDonald who also voiced Zeref the black wizard in fairy tail so when I heard them both It actually made me chuckle.

From the moment you meet the king and queen you begin to notice how much the queen is the most serious out of the two and it makes me wonder are the two really married or is it just a formality of sorts?

From the king’s childish nature and there is a moment where the king is being attacked by what looks like dogs to the sweet charms of the queen, they make a fantastic addition to the supporting cast and it wouldn’t be a fantasy anime without meeting the royal family.

Every fantasy story must have a villain, shouldn’t they?

We catch a glimpse of Cartaphilus’s handy work in the Kingdom of Cats arc, and as the show progresses along with a few other arcs and watching the bond between Elias’s and Chise grow stronger, Cartaphilus’s end game was always unclear to me ,we learn that Cartaphilus had bonded with a sorcerer called Joseph who used to be a graveskeeper.

Just from the end of episode 7 and episode 8 we really know what the two main protagonists are up against. He kind of reminds me of the character Shou Tucker from FMA Brotherhood in a sense.

This anime is a lovley fantasy anime but episodes like that give the show a eery vibe and in a way it reminds me so much of my faviroute book series ‘The Mortal Instruments’ by Cassandra Clare.

I must say that Kyle Phillips did a fantastic job directing this series! Dani Chambers’s first real role was Chise and she did a fantastic job and a wonderful addition was Brian Mathis as Elias (other roles include monkey d garp from One piece)

All in all I give this anime a definite 10/10

  1. I really enjoyed this anime. One thing that sticks out when this was airing, was the flower language. Oh boy xDD did it cause a stir in the blogging community at the time. Keep up with the post Art. I’m hoping that you do at least :D. Also, if you have any questions on how wordpress works, I’m not an expert, but feel free to ask I’ll do my best to answer xDD

      1. Always keep that in mind as you blog Art. Sometimes, it can get rough – I’ve been around the blogging sphere for 11yrs, I’ve had my ups and downs, starts and restarts (4th blog here). Sound preachy here, the more you blog and interact, the more fun it will
