Premiered: Winter 2014

Ever wondered about Japan and its gods? I can name the greek and roman gods but since were all fans of anime and Japanese culture why dont we know the names of Japanese gods?

Well Noragami gives you that and more.

Noragami everybody!

In times of need, if you look in the right place, you just may see a strange telephone number scrawled in red. If you call this number, you will hear a young man introduce himself as the Yato God.

Yato is a minor deity and a self-proclaimed “Delivery God,” who dreams of having millions of worshippers. Without a single shrine dedicated to his name, however, his goals are far from being realized. He spends his days doing odd jobs for five yen apiece, until his weapon partner becomes fed up with her useless master and deserts him.

Just as things seem to be looking grim for the god, his fortune changes when a middle school girl, Hiyori Iki, supposedly saves Yato from a car accident, taking the hit for him. Remarkably, she survives, but the event has caused her soul to become loose and hence able to leave her body. Hiyori demands that Yato return her to normal, but upon learning that he needs a new partner to do so, reluctantly agrees to help him find one. And with Hiyori’s help, Yato’s luck may finally be turning around.

The story

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Yato is a god, but he isn’t a god that isn’t well-known, he has no shrine and when his last regalia ‘spirit’ leaves him he’s back to square one ‘Delivery god Yato’ is what he calls himself.

Hiyori is a high school student, when Hiyori nearly sees God Yato being ran over by a car she runs out to help him, not realising no one else can see him and it just looks likes she ran out into the middle of the road for nothing.

While in hospital Yato visits her and Hiyori is immediately freaked out only for them to both realise that her soul now slips out of her body and she can see the god’s world that no one else can see, Hiyori demands that Yato helps her get her body back to normal. (not that he keeps that promise..)

Negative emotions can bring on dark phantoms that need to be eradicated from the existing place normal humans can see, to battle these dark phantoms we have the gods who slay them with their Regalia. What is a regalia you ask?

Another word for a regalia is shinki and Regalia are used by gods who use them as when they form a contract with a god, their souls shape into a weapon, in Yato’s case, Yukine, a young boy that just died, becomes a blade a sword.

What Yato wants more than anything is to be recognised and have his own shrine, but when making a contract with Yukine, Yukine is less than happy to follow his life style (which if I was in that situation, i would have ran away as fast I could)…

The main story of Season 1 is getting used to the characters, the story, the relationships along with getting the basic knowledge of the Japanese Gods.

When Yukine starts getting to know the job, they get attacked by the god Bishamonten, now I have to say she is absolutely gorgeous (and voiced by the fabulous Elizabeth Maxwell in the dub 😍)

Somehow Bishamon hates Yato with a passion so we go to wonder what the hell did he do?!

from meeting Bishamon we think is she going to be the bad guy? No that medal goes to an old friend of Yato only to be told he slaughted a bunch of Ragelia’s back in the day, whos regalia you ask? go and watch the show 😉

Rabo is a god of calamity and for most of the series he skulks within the shadows using the Regalia Nora, Nora is a regalia belonging to many different gods and Nora is a regalia who could basically be called unpure, because Nora also was named by Yato at some point Yukine gets rather jealous at this and in the end causes enough mischief to hurt Yato his master in such a way that a cleansing had to be done.

Yukine during his cleansing

Once they think everything is hanky dory, Yato has been escaping the fact he hadn’t sorted out Hiyori’s body situation only for her to LOOSE HER MEMORY??!!

I’d say out of the whole series episode 11 and 12 when Hiyori forgets who Yato is and her memories are basically stolen to get to Yato, as we all know, and if you watch the series you will know too, that Hiyori and Yato are like destined to be together

And at the end of the season she asks Yato if they could be together forever, Yato takes her 5 yen and grants her wish

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Yato, Hiyori and Yukine are the main characters in Norgamai.

Yato is a God with no shrine and no one knows who he is. Yato spends his time doing odd jobs with the slogan ‘Fast, Affordable, Reliable, The delivery god Yato at your service!”

Yato considers himself a god of fortune but has been labelled a god of calamity because of past degressions. All throughout the first season I’ve always seemed him try to better himself. Yato can seem very childish for someone who has lived for so long, to me we never really see the real side to Yato even when Yukine would blite him every time he did something naughty.

Despite Yato’s childish ways he can be very serious and despite this he heavily relies on the people around them.

Hiyori is a 16-year-old high school student, she absolutely loves wrestling and when she slips out of her body loves to use her skills on spirits.

Hiyori Iki

Hiyori is a very strong character, but along with that she has a very kind and caring heart that you see every time she’s on screen, she has a strong sense of justice and will go out of her way to help anyone in need.

You would think growing up in a very rich household she would be stuck up, but she is just down to earth and is deeply loyal to her friends especially Yato and Yukine.

Yukine is the Regalia for Yato after his last one quits.

Yukine is first portrayed as a cold and cruel young boy at first . He is clearly upset and annoyed at the fact that he died, and became Yato’s weapon, complaining about staying with someone like him who basically lives under other people’s shrines and is basically a bum of a god.

Yukine unfortunately takes advantage of this and other people, stealing money, clothes, and even betraying Hiyori. Yukine is jealous of others who are alive, upset about the fact that he is dead, and cannot make friends. Once you get through half of the season you realise that the season is around Yukine getting used to being a regalia and getting to know the world of noragmai

Kofuku is a goddess of poverty even though she tries to hide this by calling herself Kofuku Ebisu to make it look like she’s a god of fortune, Diakoku is her only shinki, he calls her ‘my mistress’ which makes many people think he’s her lover

Kofuku and Diakoku

Even though these two are probably my favourite pairs in the series, the other gods aren’t as important as our 3 main characters but do make the series quite interesting!

The Animation

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I always put this on the review, but like a normal anime there isn’t much to say about the animation of

My Opinion

Noragami has been a favourite of mine and I have wanted to review it for a long time but when I look at it as a whole it isn’t a very impressive anime.

When you look at both the dub and sub, both of them are good, even though there are so many different layers to this anime adding on season 2 events.
